Traumatic Events Shaped Margaret Cho’s Sexuality

CATEGORIES

Margaret ChoMargaret Cho wears her sexuality on her sleeve.

She was in an open relationship with her husband of 11 years , Al Ridenou, who she recently divorced.

She advocates for LGBT causes and is bisexual.

She has been critical of the government action to shut down the prostitution site rentboy.com telling the MetroWeekly “it was a way to keep people safe.”

She is also supportive of AshleyMadison calling both controversies an example of this country’s anti-sexual attitudes.

It’s amazing she has been so forthcoming about her thoughts, given what happened to her as a child.

It’s something she’s kept a secret until now.

In an article published this week in Billboard, she talks about being sexually abused as a child for seven years beginning at age five.

“I had a very long-term relationship with this abuser, which is a horrible thing to say,” said Cho.  “I didn’t even understand it was abuse, because I was too young to know. I endured it so many times, especially because I was alone a lot.”

It wasn’t long after that abuse ended that another traumatic event happened to her.

“I was raped continuously through my teenage years, and I didn’t know how to stop it. It was also an era where young girls were being sexualized. For me, I think I had been sexually abused so much in my life that it was hard for me to let go of anger, forgive or understand what happened.”

With all this happening, how is it possible she has been open about sex? People react differently to traumatic events. Each individual has to have a response they are comfortable with.

She’s written a song that no doubt her past helped shape, I Want to Kill My Rapist.

She talks about the song and her feelings about how the trauma has  impacted her sexuality.  She also shares her Korean American parents response to her past in Billboard.
