Crienglish: Longtime Asian American Judge Starts New Chapter

Lillian Sing

After 32 years as a judge in San Francisco, Lillian Sing officially retires today.

Crienglish, however, reports she won’t be retiring her passion of making a difference.

The first Chinese American woman judge says she will devote her time to fighting for compensation for comfort women and lobbying the city of San Francisco to build a monument to them.

If successful, the city would be the largest in the United States to build such a monument.

Others are already in the cities of Glendale, CA; Southfield, MI; and Palisades Park, N.J, which in 2010 became the first city in the country to erect one.

Sing said she was inspired to make the comfort women her passion project after reading The Rape of Nanking by journalist Iris Chang.

“There will be no peace without apologies,” she says.

On Tuesday, a former comfort woman spoke to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors supporting a memorial, reported the San Francisco Examiner.

“I came to this beautiful San Francisco to meet with you and I want to ask you from the bottom of my heart, please, please let me get rid of my sadness in my heart by erecting a memorial in this beautiful city of San Francisco,” Yong Soo Lee said.

The memorial has been controversial to some segments of the Japanese American community. Some believe that Japan is singled out in the memorial and believe it would be more important to focus a memorial on all persecuted women.
