A name of a rock band that angered members of the Vietnamese community has agreed to change its name, reports the Global Post,
Viet Cong is the name given to communist forces that defeated South Vietnam and sent refugees fleeing their homeland for the U.S. and other countries.
Protesters in Minnesota which has a large South Asian American community demanded that the band’s show in Minneapolis be cancelled because of the group’s offensive name.
Back in March, Oberlin College cancelled the band’s scheduled performance there due to similar concerns.
The all-White band is from Canada.
“We are not here to cause pain or remind people of atrocities of the past,” the group said on Facebook. ” Our band-name is not our cause, and we are not going to fight for it. This is not what our band is about,”
There’s no word on what the new name will be.
