Daily Beast: Racist Patients Make Clear They Don’t Want to See a Minority Doctor

Imagine going through years of medical school to become a doctor and then hearing about a White patient who doesn’t want to be treated by a minority.

According to one doctor, this is more common than most might think.

Farah Khan told her story in the Daily Beast.

Khan has heard patients request that no foreigners treat her even though she was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.

Another patient requested specifically that no “Indian” doctors see her. Khan’s parents are from India.

Ouch, that’s got to hurt.

Lots of studies have been conducted about racial bias in health care, but few have been done on the racial bias of patients.

I’ve personally seen studies that show minority patients feel more comfortable in the hands of someone from their own racial background, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a minority patient saying they didn’t want to be treated by a White doctor.

You can read about Khan’s experiences in the Daily Beast.
