San Francisco Chronicle: Legendary Sam Wo to Reopen in Chinatown

Sam Wo, the popular hole in the wall late night eatery known for its dumbwaiter and the man affectionately known as the world’s rudest waiter, the late Edsel Ford, is set to reopen next month.

The San Francisco Chronicle says the new location on Clay Street near Portsmouth Square is just a few blocks from the original on Washington which shut down in 2012 due to health code violations. Sam Ho, the original owner, tried to reopen there, but a rent increase proved to be too high.

The new location will try to create the old charm with many of the standards such as tomato beef chow fun, but the menu will be paired down. Beer and wine will be offered for sale for the first time.

“We’ve updated the decor,” said Steven Lee, Ho’s business partner in the new venture. “It’s not the funky place it was, but it has that old-school feel.”

The place of course will look much spiffier than the old location. Ho & Lee dismiss the health code violations that plagued the original saying “Any place has a lot of rats so they’ll find a way to get in.”

“It’s different. It’s a larger place, but it’s cool because it’s going to be a team of employees,” said daughter Julie Ho who will work at the new restaurant. “It’s now a real business, not just a family thing.”

You can read about the help they received to open the new location and what you can expect in the San Francisco Chronicle.
