RT: Whites Asked Not to Attend Yoga Class for People of Color

Yoga

Do minorities who attend yoga sessions need a space where they can feel more comfortable?

That’s the intent of a yoga class for people of color offered by Rainier Beach Yoga near Seattle. In an email, the studio states “white friends, allies and partners are respectfully asked not to attend,” reports RT.

The class was co-founded by Teresa Wang and states that “lesbian, bisexual, gay, queer and trans-friendly/affirming,” as well as those who identify as “African American/black/of the African Diaspora, Asian, South Asian, West Asian/Arab/Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, First Nations/Alaskan Native/Native American/Indigenous, Chicano/Latin, or Multiracial/Mixed-Race” are encouraged to attend.

The class is only offered once a month and has set off a firestorm among conservatives. Wang says she doesn’t know what would happen if a White man tried to join the class.

The Dori Monson Show on KIRO Radio thinks if a class were only offered for Whites, it would be a national story leading every major newscast. He thinks the State Attorney General should investigate.

I’d be interested in hearing from people who participate in yoga. Is such a class needed? Do you feel LGBT and minorities would feel more comfortable in a class set aside for them? Does this class discriminate against Whites? Share your thoughts below.
