According to Deadline, in a message to fans on The Walking Dead aftershow, executive producer Scott Gimple said “Dear fans of The Walking Dead, this is a hard story to tell and when we were planning to tell, we knew our friends at the Talking Dead would be talking to you about it, and knowing you’d all be talking, and feeling and commiserating.
“So I’ll say this – In some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story to help complete the story.”
SPOILER ALERT (Don’t read further if you don’t want to know how Glenn died)
Glenn died when he became trapped on top of dumpster with Nicholas (Michael Traymor). Nicholas says thank you to Glenn, then shoots himself in the head. His body falls on top of Glenn, sending both into the dumpster where it appears the Walkers feast on Glenn.
Deadline leaves open the possibility Glenn actually might still be alive.
If so, that would be good. Although Glenn’s nice guy image and romance with Maggie (Lauren Cohan) gave Glenn a special relationship with fans, he was especially special for Asian Americans. His bad ass image is not one often seen in Hollywood portrayals of Asian Americans, unless they happen to be a martial artist. His romance with Maggie also set him apart form most characters played by Asian American actors.
As for Steve Yeun himself, he so far has said nothing about Glenn’s apparent death.
He tweeted something instead about the death of Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders from cancer.
RIP Flip.
