The Huang family gets into the Halloween spirit sans Jessica in Tuesday’s episode of Fresh Off the Boat.
Titled Miracle on Dead Street , this episode is destined to be a Fresh Off the Boat Halloween classic worthy of a repeat each Halloween.
It’s the silliest and perhaps most creative show of the 18 original episodes that have aired since the series debut mid-season last year.
It’s especially refreshing that Jessica (Constance Wu) gets a chance to tell jokes other than those based on her frugality and tiger mom tendencies.
That gag is getting a bit tired, and hopefully Jessica will be able to expand her comedy bit on the show.
In this episode, she’s determined to defend her investment property from Halloween pranksters who are on record with plans to egg her home.
It took an army in the name of Honey (Chelsey Crisp) to hold Jessica back from staging an early preemptive strike against the boys.
Meanwhile young Evan (Ian Chen) pulls some parliamentary maneuvers at the Home Owner Association meeting to get his dad, Louis (Randall Park) on the agenda. It’s his first Halloween since he moved into the Florida suburb, and he’s determined to rally the neighbors into some big time Halloween spirit.
A lot happens in this episode and sometimes the show seems rushed. Some of the gags get lost because viewers are left wondering what they just said. The directors need to let the show breathe more and not move at such a frantic pace.
Despite that, this is my personal favorite episode of the second season so far, and I’m not really all that into Halloween. Any TV fanatics who remember the 80’s will especially enjoy the references to The A Team and Mr T. Remember him?
