Buzz Feed Yellow: Geisha Halloween Costume Irritates Japanese American Women

More racist cultural appropriation is surfacing as we get closer to Halloween.

A geisha costume for sale looks closer to something someone with a latex fetish might wear.

Sequins and chokers meant more for a night of clubbing than traditional Japanese dance adorn the “kimono.”

The costume is so far from being an authentic it’s laughable. Never mind that some of the motifs on the outfit are Chinese, not Japanese.

As one Japanese American woman put it, “this is the least Japanese thing I ever wore in my whole life.”

Another said “I might as well wear your bathrobe.”

BuzzFeed Yellow asked four Japanese American women to try on the costume and here’s their reaction.
