ABC7: Negotiations Underway to Settle Discrimination Case against Sephora

Negotiations are in the works to reach a settlement in a class action suit brought by Asian customers of the cosmetic retailer Sephora, reports ABC7 News.

Many frequent customers who had gained elite status because of their many purchases suddenly found their accounts deactivated because they say they have Chinese surnames.

Sephora was responding to concerns that its cosmetics were being bought in bulk and then resold in China at a huge profit.

“The only account holders who could not access the website had email addresses associated with three Chinese email service providers,” said attorney Jeanne Christensen.

Sephora says the suit is baseless and that many people from many countries were impacted.

“Clients from many countries around the world, including the U.S., were impacted by the temporary outage of the Company’s website during a promotional event last year,” Sephora said in a statement. “Sephora would never engage in any form of discrimination with respect to its clients, and it looks forward to full exoneration in this lawsuit.”
