Two Korean Americans Elected to Philadelphia City Council

Helen Gym

The city of brotherly love showed its love for two Korean American candidates for city council.

Education activist Helen Gym was the top vote-getter in the race for seven council seats, hauling in 142,563 votes. That’s an incredible accomplishment in a field with four incumbents.David Oh

Topping the field of Republican candidates was incumbent David Oh with 34,220 votes. It will be a week before his election is certified, but Oh is confident of his re-election calling it a done deal.

What’s really remarkable is that two Korean Americans were apparently elected in a city where they make up less than half percent of the population, according to the U.S. Census in 2010.

Overall, Asians are six percent of the city.

Gym is the co-founder of Parents United for Public Education and is well known in the Asian American community for her advocacy. Oh began serving in 2012. This will be his second term.
