Campus rape is a huge issue in colleges nationwide. So much so that laws and regulations have been passed to draw a line between consensual sex and rape.
In California, a law went into effect this year. It’s commonly known as the “yes means yes” rule.
Your partner must specifically say “yes” before you engage in sex. Lack of protest or silence does not count.
Critics of the law say the lines are blurred and the law could lead to unwarranted expulsions from campus or even imprisonment.
With the high rate or enrollment of Asian American students from community colleges to elite universities, this is certainly an issue impacting Asian American students.
“It’s only recently I’ve seen the discussion of consent being spoken about,” said one student to the Desi Blitz. “It may be a while for Asians to grasp consent as something important.”
The article goes on to break down sexual consent into various stages–communication, respect, influence, clothing, and guilt.
