A man arrested in San Francisco this past fall for spraying racist graffiti on homes and public property in San Francisco has been convicted.

A jury today found John Schenone, 62, guilty of 13 misdemeanors, including seven counts of vandalism and six counts of a hate crime.

Police arrested Schenone after the words “NO MORE CHINESE” were spray painted in six separate San John SchenoneFrancisco locations including several homes, retail outlets and public recreational areas.

Authorities concluded all the graffiti had been made with the same type of color instrument. They also had surveillance video of two of the incidents

“Racism has no place in San Francisco,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “We pride ourselves on being a diverse, tolerant and inclusive city. Actions such as these strike at the heart of who we are and the values we hold dear.”

Authorities credit the cooperation of many members of the public for both the arrest and prosecution, along with the work of several officers.

“This outcome would not have been possible without the cooperation of many courageous members of the community,” said ADA Myles Campbell. “They provided crucial evidence that led to the identification of the man who committed these hate crimes.”
