Cultural appropriation is alive and well. This time with religious symbols.
Hindus are urging the immediate halt to sales of tee shirts, tank tops, mugs and blankets with Lord Ganesha’s image on them.
They are being sold by Print Syndicate under the brand Look Human.
The home goods and apparel company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.
The products include the slogans “Namaste Bitches” and “Bitch don’t kill my vibe.”
“Lord Ganesha is highly revered in Hinduism and is meant to be worshiped in temples or home shrines and not to be trivialized on consumer products with such slogans,” said Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism.
According to Zed, faith is something sacred and attempts at trivializing it hurt the followers, Zed added.
In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshiped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking. There are about three million Hindus in USA.
A check of Print Syndicate’s website found similar uses of images of Jesus on its products.
