Ken Han lived in the dorms during his first year at the University of Missouri in 2014.
He said others would often use slurs when talking about him.
“They just hated me just because I am Asian — maybe my appearance, accent, everything,” Han said.
Race has been a big issue on campus and the University’s president resigned after student protests in the fall.
Despite that, several Asian students told the Missourian they are reluctant to report such incidents.
“We don’t have that many people whom we know anyway,” said Russell Hsu, Vice President of the Taiwanese Student Association. “So, our social circles are a lot tighter. So, you don’t want to offend anybody and (get) everything broken up.”
Yizhe Sun is a fourth year student from China. She recalls being called a “chink” her first year on campus.
“I feel very sad and embarrassed,” he said. “It made me feel as if White people really don’t like Chinese.”
The university for the first time has set up an office where students can file complaints about such incidents. You can read about those efforts and the stories of numerous other Asian and Asian American students in the Missourian.
