Two Asian Americans among Most Mentioned Possible Candidates for Supreme Court

Sri Srinivasan
DC Circuit Judge Sri Srinivasan, 48, has emerged as among the most mentioned, if not THE most mentioned, possible nominees to replace the late Antonio Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court, reports Ecowatch

“He’s one of the most brilliant litigators of his generation, truly breathtaking intellect,” said Ian Millhiser, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. “He also, though, clerked for two Republican judges—for a Republican court of appeals judge and then for Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court. He spent many years of his careers at a major corporate law firm. So he’s very much perceived as a sort of middle-of-the-road moderate, the sort of candidate a Democrat would put up if they wanted to extend an olive branch.”

Just three years, the Senate confirmed Srinivasan for the DC Circuit Court by a 97 – 0 vote. Many analysts say he is a nominee that would force the Republicans to explain why they are blocking his nomination, if they carry out their threat to do that. For that reason, many predict Obama will appoint a moderate such as Srinivasan.

“I think it’s likely that Obama will put forward a nomination of a moderate with outstanding credentials and probably someone who has recently been approved by the same Republican Senate by a strong vote and watch them cope with that, because I think if their—if their tactic is simply to block, that’s not going to help them in the presidential election,” said Scott Horton, an American human rights attorney.

Another intriguing Asian American candidate is California Attorney General Kamala Harris.Kamala Harris

Harris, whose mother is Indian American and father is African American,is liberal on many issues. The candidate for U.S. Senate to replace retiring Senator Barbara Boxer, is opposed to the death penalty, and is in favor of legalizing medical marijuana and is for a clear path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

“Kamala Harris would be an unusual choice — most recent appointments have been federal court of appeals judges — but a plausible one,” said Erwin Chemerinksy, dean of the UC Irvine School of Law, told the Los Angeles Times. “However, there are so many plausible names. I doubt anyone has inside information so it is just all speculation.”
