India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to speak to a joint session of Congress during his visit to the United States in June.
This will be Modi’s third trip to the United States since being elected in May 2014.
The Indian government has expressed interest in having Modi speaking to Congress. Recently it met with Speaker Paul Ryan’s office along with the White House to work out the details.
“India is the most populous democracy and soon it’s going to be the most populous country,” said Ryan about extending the invitation. “The friendship between our nations will be a pillar of stability in a very, very important region. This address presents a special opportunity for us to deepen our ties with our ally India.”
House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) expects the speech to touch on defense, nuclear power, renewable energy and space exploration.
“I look forward to welcoming the Prime Minister to the Capitol,” he said. “I look forward to hearing from Prime Minister Modi about how we can continue working together to promote peace and prosperity.”
