WABC: Chinatown Beating Sparks Concern in New York

Chinatown beatingA Chinatown restaurant manager who came to the defense of his waitress is speaking out about the beating he endured from a customer.

Video circulating on the internet shows the victim on the ground helpless, while the suspect repeatedly pounded him until he was a bloody mess.

The incident took place outside a restaurant as three New York Traffic Officers watched.

“Now that I have a chance to look back at the tape, now I have a chance to see how scary it was,” the victim said to WABC’s Cefaan Kim exclusively.

The victim say suspect Montress Gomez was sexually harassing one of his female employees. He was asked to leave, but made a scene and punched a dent into the wall.

The manager said he followed the suspect outside and thought he saw three cops, but they were traffic enforcement agents and not uniformed officers. They called New York Police for help, not no officers arrived until well into the beating.

The suspect was arrested.

Assemblyman Ron Kim says he recently met with Mayor Bill de Blasio about increased attacks on Asians.

“He’s willing to make sure that the NYPD has the resources in terms of the language barriers. To make sure that every person that has help, speaking Mandarin who calls 911, they don’t have to wait 10 minutes to speak to someone,” Assemblyman Kim said.
