Guardian: South Asian Migrants Say They Were Put in Body Bags and Deported

A group of South Asians being deported from the United States after their requests for asylum were denied are accusing immigration authorities of roughing them up and leaving them in some cases bruised.

The Guardian reports the deportees alleged they were shocked with tasers and even placed in body bags.

“That’s something that made us really afraid,” said Ahmed. “And me and a lot of fellow detainees started crying and begging [the ICE officers] not to do the same thing to us – we told them, ‘we’ll walk, ‘we’ll walk’ [on to the plane].”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement acknowledges using minimum force on detainees who would not cooperate and said they placed some of them in “restraint” or “security blankets.”

It said about a dozen detainees were combative and refused to cooperate.

Immigration advocates say its difficult to determine if the allegations from detainees are true since they have little contact with community organizations or attorneys once they return home.

“These allegations, if true, are extremely troubling and must be investigated,” said Paromita Shah, the associate director of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild.

The detainees are from India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
