Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey is accused of intimidating Hmong voters

Accusations of voter intimidation of Hmong voters in a rural California county are resurrecting memories of the segregated South.

Raw Story reports California Attorney General Kamala Harris is investigating allegations that armed deputies from Siskiyou County showed up at the homes of Hmong and threatened to arrest anyone who illegally voted.

The ACLU also accuses the deputies of setting up check points outside a subdivision and only stopping cars driven by Hmong.

The Attorney General and Secretary of State’s office said it sent monitors to voting places in the county to ensure voters could cast ballots “free of intimidation, interference or threats of violence.”

“We are specifically monitoring reports of alleged voter intimidation among vulnerable minority populations, such as the Hmong community,” said Rachele Huennekens, a spokeswoman for Attorney General’s Office. “Anyone who witnesses or is subject to voter intimidation should report it to the Secretary of State’s office.”

Sheriff Jon Lopey is active in several right wing movements. He said he was only investigating allegations of voter fraud, but did not offer any evidence to support his suspicions.
