The Star Trek blog 1701 News reports that a close look at a new trailer released in Korea for Star Trek Beyond gives fans the first glimpse at Sulu’s husband and daughter.
The revelation that Sulu has a husband sparked controversy when actor George Takei, who originated the character, said portraying Sulu as gay was counter to Star Trek creator’s Gene Roddenberry’s vision.
The trailer shows Doug Jung, who is listed as a co-writer in the movie, carrying a young Demora Sulu.
Takei’s opposition to the new development in his character, now portrayed by John Cho, was somewhat surprising in that Takei has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community and who has admitted he delayed coming out as gay out of fear for his career.
Co-writer Simon Pegg and actor Zachary Quinto, who is openly gay, have pushed back and defended the decision to reveal Sulu as gay.
Meanwhile Beyond director Justin Lin says when he’s done promoting his latest movie, he will devote his attention to his next project, an American adaptation of the popular manga Lone Wolf And Cub.
“I’m excited because Lone Wolf And Cub is one of many projects that I can’t wait to go back and revisit in the next two weeks when we’re done with all the press,” he told Empire in an exclusive interview.
Lin is already dropping hints his movie will have a predominantly Asian cast.
“Five-to-ten years ago, they would have wanted Keanu Reeves to play the dad… I think the cool thing about it is that filmmaking has gone global. There’s many ways to make a movie and I think Hollywood has to evolve.”
