An Indian American man in Nebraska is recovering from a broken nose, split lip and bruised calf after he says his attacker screamed “Isis (expletive), get out of my country,” reports Arab American News.
“He started punching me fast. Then I started covering my face like this. Then he gave me a punch,” Suthahar Subburaj said.
The Council of American of American-Islamic Relations is calling for a federal investigation.
“We urge law enforcement authorities to investigate this attack as a hate crime and for public officials to repudiate the growing Islamophobia in our society that inevitably leads to violence and discrimination targeting American Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
The incident happened outside a restaurant after Subburaj was mistaken as a Muslim
Yesterday President Obama marked the Islamic holiday Eid al-Fitr by decrying discrimination and violence against Muslims.
“Singling out Muslim Americans feeds the lie of terrorists like ISIL that the West is somehow at war with a religion that includes over a billion adherents. That’s not smart national security,” said the President in a not so veiled attack on Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump.
