Skylar Lee, a Korean American Trans teen, is being honored posthumously with the naming of a Leadership and Activism Award in his memory.

The Gender and Sexual Alliance Network, a non-profit dedicated with working with LGBTQ youth and straight allies,  announced the award one year after Skylar took his own life.

Skylar was a junior at Madison West High School in Wisconsin fighting depression caused by the homophobic treatment from his classmates due to his transmasculine identity.

He once wrote:

“We cannot separate the conversation between racial justice and LGBTQ justice when our oppression and liberation are interconnected with one another. Our identities are intersectional simply because we exist [..] Being East-Asian, specifically Korean, with light skin, able-bodied, and being born a citizen of the U.S., I experience a huge privilege within our education system. In my activism in racial justice and queer justice, I work with queer youth of color every day who […] are actively being pushed out of school.”

The Skylar Lee Leadership & Activism award will be open to LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander students who are doing activism at the intersections of racial and gender justice in their high school Gay and Sexual Alliances during the 2016-2017 school year.  The award will be given out at the end of the school year and will include a financial prize to be announced later.
