Members of dozens of neighborhood organizations protested outside city hall and accused Mayor Bill de Blasio of not working to preserve low income housing in Chinatown and the Lower East Side, reported DNA Info.
The Chinatown Working Group, a coalition of 52 organizations, demanded that de Blasio resign and held up an unflattering paper mache’ likeness of the mayor.
“Y’all should be mad, because everybody’s being displaced around here,” said Angel Pizarro of the National Mobilization Against Sweatshops, part of the Chinatown Working Group. “Hide your kids, hide your children, everybody’s being displaced.”
The Working Group has lobbied unsuccessfully to place height limits on buildings to slow the influx of high rise luxury apartments.
They contrasted that to the 2008 passage of rezoning in the East Village, a wealthy White neighborhood.
