An Asian American reporter was on a New York Street recording video when a White man stuck his face in front of the camera and yelled “Yeah, Trump.”

Heated four letter words were exchanged between the two.

“If anyone thinks this not so small Chinese girl can be victimized, think again,” she said. The two came close to exchanging blows.

Just a minor incident in the big city, but it’s incidents like that that prompted the Asian American Studies Department at Urbana University in Ohio to offer a self defense class, reports WAND TV.

“We ended up developing the hate crime survival seminar series which addresses basic self defense, the hijab grab defense and as well as responding to verbal assault which can be done with the bystander attack, what we can do long term, to stop hate crimes long term.” said Zaineb Abdulla, Vice President of Deaf Planet Soul which put on the class for Urbana.

Mimi Nguyen, an Associate Professor of Women Gender and Asian American Studies, says many people of color have expressed anxieties following the rise in hate crimes seemingly spurred by the election of Donald Trump. The class is a response to that.

The class is likely to be repeated next semester as well.
