Fox 40: Sacramento Swears in its First Asian American Police Chief

Sam LouieA moment of pride for the Asian American community in Sacramento.

California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye swore in Sacramento’s new interim police chief Brian Louie, a 36 year veteran of the department, reports Fox 40. Louie becomes the city’s first Asian American police chief. He was sworn in by the states’ first Asian Filipina American Chief Justice.

“I look forward to the challenges that face our city, the organization. But I will tell you right now, I am up for that challenge,” Chief Brian Louie said.

Louie is credited with bringing Asian Americans together during a rash of home burglaries targeting the community. He immediately arranged a community meeting with then chief Sam Somers and the Sacramento Sheriff Department.

“The (Asian-Pacific Islander) community, we have been such an integral part of the city for such a long time, but it’s taken us a long time to come into our own and see some of our own community people in positions of leadership, so seeing Brian in this position, it’s just so incredible, and makes us so proud,” Georgette Imura told Fox 40. She and Louie have both served on the C.A.P.I.T.A.L (Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership) Board.
