Is Transportation Secretary Nominee Elaine Chao Backtracking on Trump Pledge?

President-elect Trump has said he wants to spend $1 trillion dollars to rebuild America’s infrastructure

One of the few points of agreement between Democratic Congressional leaders and President-elect Trump is his pledge to spend one trillion dollars to rebuild U.S. roads, bridges and other projects.

Papers filed by Trump’s nominee for transportation secretary however seem to indicate Elaine Chao is not sold on the idea.

CNN reports Chao indicated on a questionnaire filed with the Senate Transportation committee that streamlining red tape and getting the most out of every dollar spent will be her priorities.

Missing from her answers were any mention of the cash infusion that will be needed to rebuild America’s infrastructure, something both Trump and Democrats have said would be a job creator.

Chao’s own husband who happens to be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has openly disagreed with the President-elect saying he hoped to “avoid a trillion dollar stimulus.”

McConnell throughout President Obama’s two terms didn’t hide the fact his number one goal was to prevent another four years of a Democrat in the White House.

Working with Democrats on anything seems repulsive to him.

A Trump transition team spokesman, however, tried to quell any talk of a rift between Chao and the president-elect.

“The secretary fully supports the President-elect’s call for investment, innovation and modernization of our nation’s infrastructure, said RC Hammond. “She, like the President-elect, believes this investment is vital to moving America’s economy forward and to ensuring that all Americans are safe as they travel our roads, skies and rails.”
