GI Babies from Vietnam War Still Struggle to Search for Biological Parents

The Voice of America profiled the stories of three mixed race children now in the United States and the uphill struggle to find their biological parents.

While there have been many harrowing but heartwarming stories of refugee families who landed on America’s shores after escaping Vietnam, the stories of GI babies abandoned as orphans in their home country remain an ongoing saga.

All three profiled by VOA are now in the United States and all three are using DNA to find their parents.

Moki now is a parent herself, and realizes she knows nothing about her family’s medical history. Her urgency to find her parents is not only personal, but stems from her desire to ensure the health of her own children.

Tam was abandoned, left in a box outside a bar. The bar owner would adopt Tam, but eventually leave him with his parents who never accepted their grandson. Tam would eventually be sold to another family. Today Tam is in the United States through the American Homecoming Act.  Tam eventually discovered her father died in an auto accident.

Jannie also came to the United States through the American Homecoming Act.  Jannie finds community with other mixed race children searching for their parents. She has not been able to find her parents.
