The new year kicked off with the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California celebrating the successes people have had working together with others. Some of the colorful floats showcased Asian and Pacific Islander themes, according to NBC News.
Students from Honda’s Tomodachi education and cultural exchange program from Fukushima rode American Honda Motor Company’s float, Hope Blooms Forever. It was adorned with origami, chrysanthemum dolls from Fukushima’s Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Festival of Japan.
Other floats such as Donate Life’s Teammates in Life and Dole Packaged Foods Spirit of Hawaii made use of Polynesian and Hawaiian decor, with Hawaiian performers walking alongside or on floats.
A Singpoli Affiliate’s The Monkey King: Journey to Success put the spotlight on Sun Wu Kong, the Chinese monkey king from classical Chinese literature.
United Sikh Mission’s Together We Rise honored Sikhism and the Golden Temple from India. China Airlines’s Return to the Beauty of Taiwan” displayed elements of Taiwanese culture with dancers and Taiwanese birds and plants.

In addition, the 26th Cavalry (Philippine Scouts) Ceremonial Mounted Unit and the Gifusho Green Band from Japan both participated in this year’s Rose Parade.
