Comedian and talk show host Steve Harvey, the same one who announced the wrong winner when he emceed the Miss Universe contest in 2015, is under fire for ridiculing Asian American men.
Rep Grace Meng, State Assembly members Ron Kim and Yuh-Line Niou, and New York City Councilmembers Margaret Chin and Peter Koo are demanding an immediate apology for “offensive, classless comments on a recent segment of the Steve Harvey.”
The four sent off a letter to Harvey and NBC Universal Television, the network that distributes the program, as well as the William Morris Endeavor Entertainment.
In the clip, you begin by making fun of a book purporting to Asian men romantic advice, and make it clear you find the very idea that White women might be interested in them ridiculous. You then claim the same for Black women, before rounding it off with a crude joke about Asian cuisine.
According to the NY Daily News, Harvey’s program has apologized.
“Steve Harvey was poking fun at unusual book titles in a comedic segment from Friday’s show,” a spokesperson said. “His comments were never meant to demean the Asian community and the show sincerely apologizes to anyone who was offended.”
