Justin Chon’s Gook Wins Audience Award at Sundance

Justin Chon’s movie Gook has been awarded the audience award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT.

The film was inspired by Chon’s family’s own experience during the Koreatown riots after the Rodney King verdict in 1992.

After apologizing for his “Justin Beiber hair,” Chon got serious during his acceptance speech Saturday night.

“At every screening during the festival I’ve talked about diversity and a lot of it’s really been just talk,” he said. “I feel the most effective way I can make a difference is for me to create, so this is my two cents to the community of creators. I’m in awe that I’m even here. This is the pinnacle of independent filmmaking. Thank you for allowing us to showcase our film here.”

Chon’s own family’s business was looted on the last day of the Koreatown riots.

“I felt a need to tell the Korean perspective of what the riots were like because a lot of the Korean experience gets swept under the rug,” he told the Wrap.

Gook is the story of two Korean American brothers and their friendship with an African American girl. The riots force the trio to defend the store and reexamine the meaning of family.
