Former Obama Advisor to Lead Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC

  1. John YangA former Obama Administration advisor has been named the new president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, a civil rights group in Washington, DC.

John Yang will replace Mee Moua, who told AAJC about her desire to move on in October. Yang and Moua will work together until mid-March to ensure a smooth transition.

Yang served as Senior Adviser for East Asian Affairs in the Commerce Department beginning in November 2014. He has more than 20 years experience as an attorney and served as President of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association from 2002-2003. He also chaired the board of directors of the Advancing Justice | AAJC from 2005 – 2008.

“In the days following the election, I strongly felt the importance of dedicating myself to safeguarding the rights of my family, my community, and all Americans,” said Yang The work of Advancing Justice | AAJC is well-known to me. With so many battles that lay ahead to ensure equal protection and civil rights for all Americans, I am proud to join a team that is equally passionate and prepared to move our causes forward.”

As an immigrant, Yang is grateful for the opportunities the United States has given his parents and family. He says those American values of welcoming immigrants is under attack and must be defended.

“John’s track record as a relationship-builder and problem-solver in various fields and across cultural contexts makes him the clear choice to lead Advancing Justice | AAJC,” said Parkin Lee, Chair of the Board of Directors of Advancing Justice | AAJC. “John joins us with deep knowledge of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community and with great enthusiasm and energy to advance our fight for civil rights in an uncertain political atmosphere.”
