Two years after the indictment of then New York police officer Peter Liang, hundreds of people who mobilized to support him are vowing to stay together and fight for other issues, reports News 12 Brooklyn

The Coalition of Asian Americans for Civil Rights sprang up to protest the charges against Liang, who fired his gun in a darkened stairwell in a public housing project. The bullet ricochet off the wall and struck and killed Akai Gurley, an unarmed Black man.

The group, made up of mostly Chinese immigrants, said it was unfair White police officers who killed unarmed Black people have avoided prosecution while Liang did not.

“This is not a celebration. This is just a reunion for the volunteers who have worked so hard in a few rallies that we had,” said an organizer. The group pledged to continue their work and fight injustice against the community.

Liang was eventually convicted of criminally negligent homicide and was sentenced to five years probation and 800 hours of community service.

The case deeply divided the Asian American community, with others saying the community must stand with those fighting injustice against all. They felt the White police officers should have been prosecuted as well, but the fact that they weren’t, didn’t justify not prosecuting Liang.

  1. RE:Supporters of Former police officer Peter Liang vow to continue fight: Fighting to continue an unjust policy and to provide injustice to victims of ANY police officer is criminal, not social justice. Fighting to have other murderers convicted is noble, saying “but they get away with evil so we should too” is the opposite of noble- it;s disgusting.

  2. RE: Supporerscof NY police officer Peter Liang vow to continue fight:They are protesting that the white police officers should have been held accountable to the same standards rather than protesting that Liang should not.
