Food Network Show Faces Backlash for ‘Anti-Asian’ Episode

An old episode of The Pioneer Woman on The Food Network is being described as anti-Asian

On the Food Network, unfortunately airing reruns also means retreading tired racist sentiments.

Ree Drummond’s cooking series The Pioneer Woman is facing harsh criticism from the Asian American podcast Thick Dumpling Skin for a five-year-old episode that is “anti-Asian.”

In the episode, Drummond served up a tray of “spicy Asian hot wings,” to the disappointment and dismay of a huge crowd of family and friends. As she pulled the tray out of the oven, members of her family and film crew asked where “the real wings” were and remarked that they “didn’t trust [the Asian wings].”

Drummond laughed and said, “I’m just kidding guys, I wouldn’t do that to you.” She then proceeded to serve a tray of American Buffalo wings, much to the delight of the crowd.

Thick Dumpling Skin admonished Food Network on their website and tweeted out their objection.

The podcast expressed concern over the airing of an episode in which “an entire family mocks” an Asian American dish, according to Fox News. Members of the podcast also called for Food Network to add more Asian chefs to the TV personalities they star.

Neither Drummond nor Food Network have commented on the issue.
