Views from the Edge

An Indian American woman confronted Sean Spicer at an Apple Store over the weekend peppering him with questions such as  “How does it feel to work for a fascist? How does it feel?”

Shree Chauhan, 33, followed Spicer as he purchased an item, according to Vice, and continued to ask him questions. “Have you helped with the Russia stuff? Are you a criminal as well? Have you committed treason too, just like the president? How do you feel about destroying our country? Do you feel good about lying tot he American people?”

She received a strange response from the White House press secretary, who mostly ignored the questions. Eventually, he said, “Thank you,” Spicer said, smiling. “Thank you. Such a great country that allows you to be here.”

The woman, 33-year-old Shree Chauhan, was born in New York. Living in Washington D.C., she has encountered some of the better-known denizens of the nation’s capitol but usually she gives them their space and privacy. But this time, she found the courage to act, to speak up.

“I was not polite. But when does being impolite mean that I should be thrown out of the United States of America? The country I was born in, the country I was raised in, the country I love despite its flaws,” Chauhan wrote on Medium.

The video of the encounter has since gone viral and anti-Trump resistance may have found a new hero.

Chauhan writes on Medium that she believes Spicer intended the statement as a threat. “Will they come after my family?” she asks. “I am not going to dwell on fear,” she writes. “We have still not lost our country and the values that are most important to us. America stands for liberty, justice and equality. We have not always lived up to our values, but we work regularly to bend the arc towards a more perfect union.

“I hope my resistance allows others to gain the courage to resist too. If folks are already resisting, I hope it will give them energy to resist harder. If folks have not resisted, I hope it inspires them to get involved.”

There is no justification for such rude behavior.
