Coach Mocks Asian American Player During Game

Galileo High SchoolThe baseball coach at Galileo High School in San Francisco has been accused by two parents of screaming at an Asian American player while mocking him with a fake Chinese accent.

The account in the San Francisco Chronicle by columnists Phil Matier and Andy Ross has been substantiated by two parents.

Nakia Kashima, a parent of another player, says as a Japanese American, he was appalled at the February 24 incident.

The targeted player who is American born appeared confused by the instructions given to him by coach Don Papa.

An upset Papa yelled ‘”Ching, chong, something something,”‘ said Kashima. “Do you understand me now? Do you understand English.”

Another parent who asked that his name not be used confirmed Kashima’s account to Matier and Ross.

Galileo’s principal has responded to Kashima’s concerns sent to him via email.

“I want you to know that we take these kinds of charges seriously and will begin to investigate immediately.”

  1. RE: Coach mocks Asian American player during game:”It took every ounce of my strength to sit there (during the game) and not do or say a word,” he said. “I did not want to embarrass Galileo baseball and especially my son.” That’s a bad example — teaching your son that his father lacks the courage to stand up to racism? That it is better to be quiet for fear of embarrassing your son instead of showing your son how old-school Americans used to stand up for themselves and not just be a snitch to a Chronicle columnist? Shame on you, pops, read some Martin Niemoller and don’t be passive. Write “This Machine Kills Fascists” on the underside of the bill of your your baseball cap to remind you.

  2. RE: Coach mocks Asian American player during game: Before rushing to judge how another reacts to his son’s humiliation as well as his own might it be worth considering that this man knows his son better than you or I sitting comfortably removed from their shaming? Do either of us know how many times this father may have encountered a similar scenario? Isn’t possible he may have chosen to take his complaint to those in a better position to act? That’s what my old school and very courageous parents handled racism at our school in the 60’s – with dignity and consideration for our feelings.

  3. RE: Coach mocks Asian American player during game:I was actually a former student here at Galileo. Those that know Don Papa will know the kind of person he is and his way of humour and method of teaching is very different and personal with each student. I’m Asian and I can say he is by far , definitely not racist. I have witnessed on many occasionals him going the extra mile for his students. The students love him, sit in one of his classes and you will see. There’s a reason Galileo baseball was good for many years. You can’t connect with students doing everything by the books. You think comments or outburst like that doesn’t happen in the locker room or practices ? Between players and coaches, it happens all the time.
This parent should do his kid a favor and not attend anymore games. This is the real world. You want to baby him in high school? Home school him then. Can’t believe this is news. An adult and a man would approach Don Papa directly and tell him you didn’t appreciate that, then talk it out. But of course, this parent runs to the newspaper….shame of a man and father. Feel bad for the kid.
