Did President Trump Save SF Mayor Ed Lee from Being Recalled?

Ed LeeSan Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has survived a recall effort.

The SF Chronicle reports supporters of the recall failed to get the necessary 47,565 voter signatures needed to put the recall on the ballot.

In fact it appears no signatures were ever turned in at all.

Lee rode a wave of popularity and won a second term without any major opposition, but political clouds starting forming when he won only 56 percent of the vote despite no significant opposition. His approval ratings also sank.  Those feeling Lee was too close to business and real estate interests began raising their voices. They even interrupted his swearing in ceremony.

SFist wonders if the tide shifted for Lee after the election of President Donald Trump.  Suddenly progressives in San Francisco realized they had bigger worries than the mayor. Lee has been out front pushing his city as a sanctuary city despite threats from the White House that federal funding could be stripped.

This week Lee made San Francisco the first in the nation to sign a law banning the city’s participation in any Muslim database.
