Sikh Woman Told She Doesn’t Belong Here during Subway Ride

Rajpreet Heir
Rajpreet Heir was told “You don’t belong in this country.”

It’s thought that creating greater awareness of a problem can lead to solutions.

One positive from the very negative, anti-immigrant sentiment gripping many of our communities is the otherwise unreported microaggressions now getting noticed, even getting publicity.

The NY Times is reporting on the increased number of hate crimes across our country in its This Week in Hate column.

The latest incident evolved around a Sikh woman born in Indiana.

Rajpreet Heir talks about the incident that took place on a New York subway in the NY Times video below.

The number of hate crimes on New York subways reported to the anti-harassment group Hollaback has nearly doubled since the November election.

Heir however found a positive in her experience.

One woman asked her if she was alright.

“That meant something because when you’re a minority, you’re so used to just experiencing things on your own,” Heir said.

Another woman reported the incident to police.

  1. RE: Sikh woman told she doesn’t belong here during subway ride: It is so true that you experience these things on your own. Even when there are others around–or, especially when there are others around, because you have to maintain your equanimity. You almost need ten good people to reach out to you to counterbalance the one bad egg who completely ruins your day and adds another scar through the thick skin you’ve grown since childhood that is never quite thick enough.
