Despite rainy skies, dozens took part in a military wreath laying ceremony in San Francisco’s Presidio to remember the ten thousand Filipino and American soldiers who died in the Bataan Death March 75 years ago.
75,000 were captured by the Japanese Imperial Army and forced to march at least 60 miles.
“Sick and hungry and what can you do,” was how David Tejada described his memory of that March which he managed to survive.
Among those who attended the wreath laying, according to NPR, was 99-year-old Ramon Regalado. He was honored earlier this week with medals to recognize his service.
250,000 Filipino soldiers fought for the Allies in World War II. One of President Obama’s last official acts was to award those soldiers the Congressional Medal of Honor.
