Chinese British actress Gemma Chan has joined the cast of Crazy Rich Asians.
Fans of Sci-Fi might recognize Chan from the AMC hit, Humans.
She’ll be joining Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding in the Jon Chu adaptation of the Kevin Kwan best seller.
Chan will play Astrid Leong, aka The Goddess. She comes from a strong family lineage, with a closet worthy of a fashion runway and the wealth to match. She suspects her ex-army husband has a secret mistress and may be feeling a sense of insecurity due to her massive wealth.
She also has a big role in Transformers: The Last Knight which is due out in June. Other roles include appearances in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them.
Chan grew up in England. Her parents are from Hong Kong and Mainland China and her maternal grandparents from Scotland.
In an interview with The Telegram, she talked about the lack of roles for Asians.
“The statistics are really depressing,” she said. “I remember reading some that made me think, ‘Oh, you are more likely to see an alien in a Hollywood film than an Asian woman.’”
