Wesley So is the 2017 U.S. Chess Champion

Wesley So has been crowned the new King of Chess.

The Filipino American defeated  Alexander Onischuk for the $50,000 grand prize, according to St. Louis Public Radio.

Japanese American Hikaru Nakamura placed fourth behind Varuzhan Akobian.

This was So’s first championship title.

According to the Digital Journal, the 23-year-old represented the Philippines before moving to the United Sates with his adoptive parents, Lotis Key and husband, Renato Kabigting in Minnesota in 2014.

He has been playing chess since the age of 9 and won the Philippine National Chess Championship the next year.

He has won 67 straight games dating back to July.
