A man accused of spewing racist venom at a Muslim woman and then beating another unconscious in Columbus, Ohio has been released by police without charges, reports Carbonated.TV.
Rahma Warsame is hospitalized with severe facial fractures. She also lost several teeth.
Warsame says the man was berating a Muslim woman from Somali. When Warsame came to her defense, the man began beating her.
“You all will be shipped back to Africa,” Warsame quoted the man as saying before the beating.
The Council of American-Islamic Relations is calling this a hate crime.
“The fact that the perpetrator was not taken into custody and was not charged raises serious concerns and sends a very dangerous message,” said Jennifer Nimer, executive director of CAIR-Columbus.
A fundraising campaign for Warsame on Launch Good has raised $77,000 for her medical bills.
“There is no place for hatred or bigotry in Columbus, and we firmly denounce this disgusting attack,” the group Yes We Can, Columbus said in a statement. “Yes We Can Columbus calls for an investigation into this incident and for the attacker to be brought to justice… If we claim to be an Opportunity City, then we must also be a safe city for all.”
