As the third season of the DC superhero series Legends of Tomorrow returns this fall on CW, it will introduce a new dynamic female superhero and first Muslim American superhero on screen: Zari Adrianna Tomaz.

Sources from Variety say Zari will be played by Tala Ashe, who has appeared on ABC’s American Odyssey and NBC’s Smash. The superhero is a Muslim American woman from the year 2030 who “lives in a world of contradictions” where technology has changed her future while human nature has not kept to pace, according to CW.

CW says Zari, also known as Isis in the comics, is forced to become a “gray hat hacktivist” and uses her mystical powers to combat fear and defend the environment. According to the comics, she gets her powers from an ancient Egyptian artifact called the Amulet of Isis, reports Fansided.com.

Zari is not the first to represent Muslim American heroes in the media. Mashable says that the current Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, was a breakthrough character first introduced in 2013. In 2012, Simon Baz was introduced in the comics as the Muslim Green Lantern. The X-Men Universe brought superhero Dust or Sooraya Qadir in 2002 who wore a full niqab.
