14-year-old Sunisa Lee is believed to be the first Hmong American to be named to the U.S. National Olympic team, reports Minnesota Public Radio.
Earlier this year in her first international competition, she placed second in the uneven bars and helped the U.S. Junior National Team win gold. She is expected to make the U.S. Olympic team in 2020.
“I used to flip around a lot and I was super active,” Suni said. Her parents noticed that too and Suni eventually ended up at Midwest Gymnastics.
“People kept asking us, ‘Is she in gymnastics?'” said her mother Yeev Thoj said
Despite her young age, Lee has committed to attending Auburn University in 2021-2022, according to Flog Gymnastics.
