Celebrity host and journalist Lisa Ling took to Instagram to share the family’s celebration of baby Ray’s first birthday.

Ling dressed Ray in a traditional Korean outfit for dol (also spelled Dohl and Tol), one of the biggest celebrations in the Korean culture. Dol is celebrated on the first birthday of a child. Ling’s husband Paul Song is Korean American.

According to Wikipedia, Dol became very significant due to the high infant mortality rate in early Korea. The survival rate increased significantly after age one, thus the huge celebration.

Big sister Jett was also dressed in traditional clothing. She posed with both mom and grandma. Together the two pictures posted generated 11,000 likes and 200 comments.

“Love love love! And very admirable that you celebrate this although it’s more part of your husband’s heritage. ?? and 85? Wow,” wrote one commenter.

“I live for culture. So important for a human’s core, identity and story….” wrote another.

As they are in many cultures, pictures are important in Korean culture, according to Life in Korea. It’s great to see a celebrity use social media to educate her fans about her family’s heritage.
