A Vietnamese American and Filipino American have been identified as among the seven sailors killed in a collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a Philippine container ship off Japan.

VN Express reports one of the sailors killed is Ngoc T. Truong Huynh, 25, a sonar technician from Connecticut.

The other is Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan who was born in Pasig City, but raised in Chula Vista, California, according to
UNTV.

“He is, in every sense of the word, he’s my hero. We just borrowed this time from God. So now he has to go back,” said Carlos’s mother Carmen Sibayan.

Ngoc’s sister Lan Thi Huynh says her brother joined the navy in a quest for adventure.

“We will always remember him in our hearts as the most selfless person, quiet yet had the brightest smile,” she said to the Hartford Courant. “I just want everyone know that he was the best brother ever, and the sweetest human being that I knew.”
