The FBI announced Tuesday that they located the car that 26-year-old Chinese international student Yingying Zhang was last seen getting into before her disappearance.
Zhang, a University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign student studying agricultural sciences, mysteriously disappeared earlier this month, according to the Pantagraph. The missing case is being treated as a kidnapping as the FBI and university police department work together to find the missing Chinese student.
The FBI and the University of Illinois received several leads on a black Saturn Austra that surveillance videos show Zhang last got into. The Chicago Tribune said FBI spokesman Brad Ware did not provide more details on where or when the car was located but said in a statement “We have developed several additional leads and would like to remind the public that this is still an active investigation.”
Since Zhang’s disappearance, the U of I Community Credit Union setup a website to fundraise money to help her family. More than $80,000 has been donated, ABC News reports.
Zhang came to the U.S. as a visiting scholar to work towards her Ph.D and to research crop photosynthesis. Her ultimate goal was to help her working-class family.
Zhang’s father sent out a message in a telephone interview to the abductor saying, “We will forgive you, but please let Yingying go.” He told her daughter to remain strong while authorities work to find her.
The FBI is currently offering up to $10,000 to anyone with information that will help find Zhang.
