First Ever Multilingual Pro-LGBTQ APIA Ads Air as Youtube Pop-up Ads

In the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance’s (NQAPIA) mission to support LGBTQ Asians across the world, the Windy City Times reports the “Family is Still Family” Ad campaign has been shown as ads on Youtube .

The ads were displayed for Pride Month from June 24th to June 30th as pop-up Youtube ads for the first time ever in seven Asian languages-Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Hindi

The “Family is Still Family” campaign is targeted towards parents of LGBTQ children to support their coming out and acceptance within the APIA community. It features parents from different parts of the country who speak on acceptance for LGBTQ Asian Americans.

“For generations, a culture of shame and misinformation has kept Asian American youth in the closet,”  Executive Director of NQAPIA Glenn Magpantay told Erie Gay News. “Our new Asian Family Acceptance Campaign will break this cycle of shame and suicide by helping API parents, many who are immigrants and bilingual, to open the door to unconditional love and acceptance for their LGBT children.”

NQPIA said in a press release the youth in the APIA community, the fastest growing minority group in the U.S., sometimes see coming out as “shaming” or “dishonoring” their parents or ancestors, but go through depression, isolation, and even suicide if they do not express their true identities.

Aries Liao, co-founder of Asian Pride Project, said it is an honor to release these pro-LGBTQ videos at a “crucial time” in the LGBTQ movement.

“We hope these videos not only honor the immense courage of family members speaking out about their love for their children, but raise awareness more broadly of the essential role that families – no matter how you define that – can play in nurturing acceptance within the Asian American community,” Liao said.

The “Family is Still Family” ads were first shown on Asian ethnic television stations across the world in June 2016 for Pride Month and continue to impact and encourage APIA acceptance of LGBTQ’s.
