Rare Footage of Comfort Women Surfaces

Comfort Women video

The South Korean government has released what is believed to be the first film ever of Korean sex slaves for the Japanese military, reports Reuters.

The 18 second clip is believed to be from a film taken in 1944 by an American soldier in China’s Yunnan province. It was uncovered during a two year search of the United States National archive.

According to the Korea Times, researchers have been able to match the faces in the video with photo records of comfort women. A man in the film seen talking to the women is believed to be a Chinese military officer of the U.S.-China Allied Forces

The search for the clip was funded by the Seoul government.

“As unfortunate history must also be recorded and remembered so that it is not repeated, the Seoul government will focus all of its capacity and resources in documenting history and setting things right,” said Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon to the Korea Times.
