Huffpost‘s Brittany Wong did an article spotlighting the work of Kiana Khansmith, a bright young artist who grew up half-Japanese and half-Jamaican in Hawai’i. Growing up mixed race can be confusing, so artist Kiana found a way to explain this through an adorably funny set of comics.
The comic’s main character is none other than “Puppitty”, a sweet soul who grows up half-dog and half-cat in an anthropomorphic world where dogs and cats classically don’t get along. From being called “exotic” to being told that “only REAL cats can climb trees”, little Puppitty is going through an identity crisis. However, Puppitty learns that you don’t have to grow up “mixed” and alone when they discover a parakeet-fish friend who understands the same experience they’re going through.
The main reason that Kiana uses animals instead of humans is because the point of the multiracial comic is to have people of all mixed race backgrounds identify with it. Ultimately, the comic is a way to portray the multiracial experience while also spreading positivity among the multiracial community. And positivity is all you can ask for when trying to find your own identity in a complicated world.
